Whether it be a hobby or an emergency, shortwave radio listening will provide information and news (and propaganda) from around the world from both government and private – personal sources.

There are many emergency situation scenarios where a shortwave radio would be a valuable asset to be used to gain information, perhaps before others, enabling an earlier jump on decision making.

For example, your entire region loses electrical power, resulting in a loss of information from local TV and radio stations. Most people rely on cable or satellite for TV, which will be completely down. Some radio stations and transmitter towers will have generators, but that could be sketchy and limited to their fuel supply. Listening on shortwave will enable information gathering from around the world and will likely clue you in to what has happened, or is happening.

Here are two portable battery powered shortwave radios that I like (and own).
Grundig G4000A AM/FM Shortwave Radio
Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM Shortwave World Band Receiver with Single Side Band Reception

Shortwave Radio Stations targeting North America

The list of countries and large stations currently targeting shortwave radio broadcasts in English to North America include…

Albania, Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, Egypt, Iran, Japan, Kuwait, Moldova, North Korea, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, U.S.A., Ukraine, and Vietnam.

The following list is sorted by UTC time (Coordinated Universal Time)

Be sure to download and save this schedule list and print it for your reference (in case you cannot get to the Internet one day). Oh, and if you don’t already have a portable shortwave radio, maybe you should consider getting one ;)
