Russian Grain Shortage Wake Up Call
August 6, 2010
Today, Vladamir Putin, prime minister of Russia, the world’s third wheat exporter, will halt all grain exports for at least four and a half months because of severe drought that has ruined millions of acres of land.
“In connection with the unusually high temperatures and the drought, I consider it right to impose a temporary ban on the export from Russia of grain and other products produced from grain,” Putin told a government meeting.
Russia traditionally sends most of its grain exports to Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Libya who will all have to buy their wheat from somewhere else. This has already caused the price of wheat to go higher and will trickle up to higher prices of all related foods.
This is a good example of the benefit to having food storage, to insure against shortages and postponing the effects of higher food prices.
The world population of nearly 7 billion people rely heavily upon mass agriculture and distribution for their survival. There is no way that this many people could survive here without these systems. And in fact, the majority of the human population is at considerable risk to circumstances that could interrupt or eliminate the growth and distribution of food.
Growing, preserving, and storing some of your own food will help reduce your risk and exposure to systems that are out of your control. As the world population continues to explode, it will become more difficult to grow and supply enough food to support everyone. Disruptions will continue to effect greater numbers of people.
Think about it. Get yourself some insurance. Grow a garden.
