Earthquakes Bristling At Tectonic Plate Boundaries
For those of you who have been reading this site for awhile know that one of my interests and curiosities is the geophysical going’s on of our planet, including earthquakes. Well, it is interesting to notice that there have been a curious number of earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater during the past week including several quakes near the magnetic poles.
The crustal tectonic plates are alive with activity, certainly during the past week. Knowing that the crustal plates are all ‘floating’ atop very hot thick soupy magma, I can’t help but wonder if it could ever be possible given the right conditions and stresses, to have a relatively sudden ‘crack up’ or shifting of the plates. It’s an apocalyptic thought, but who’s to say…
The Pacific Ring Of Fire is always particularly active compared to the rest. This last week there were quakes all over the place on various tectonic plate boundaries.
Here is a time-lapse daily map of earthquakes of Magnitude 5 or greater these past 7 days followed by an image of them all together.
The survival preparedness angle, and the take-away from information such as this, is to realize and know that the natural environment we live in could become our demise in a heartbeat. While lots of focus is targeted on man-made risks (rightfully so… the teetering global financial system, the systems of supply and distribution that most of us depend upon for survival, on and on…), we should also be prepared for natural disaster.
There certainly are plenty of reasons to be prepared.
A report from the volcanology office in Bandung (the capital of West Java province in Indonesia) shows that the activities of Krakatau (world famous volcano) has been on the rise over the past few days, reaching almost 90 eruptions per day prompting officials on Monday to issue a warning for local residents and tourists.
A little over 24 hours since this article, 16 magnitude 5 or greater earthquakes have occurred around the Philippines / Indonesia region. These are not just aftershocks, as they are located in many different areas. Something is going on here…
One day later, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Costa Rica! Again, something out of the ‘usual’ is and has been happening of late…
