Many studies indicate that there are some health benefits of drinking tea. Especially those specific teas that may boost your immune system, fight off inflammation, and even ward off cancer and heart disease.

While some teas provide more health advantages than others, there’s plenty of evidence that regularly drinking tea can have a lasting impact on your health and wellness.

Tea contains a specific kind of flavonoid called polyphenol, one of the most potent antioxidants. Green tea has a high concentration of EGCG – which is a polyphenol under basic research for its potential to affect human health and disease. It has been widely studied.

It is found in high content in the dried leaves of green tea (7380 mg per 100 g).

The health benefits of green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers; prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels.

Here’s how I look at it… Tea consumption, especially green tea, may not be a magic bullet, but it can be incorporated in an overall healthy diet. Another health benefit of drinking tea, any type of tea, is it has no calories, no sodium, no sugar and no fat. This makes it a great drink for those watching their weight or trying to lose weight.

Many studies and research show the many probable health benefits of green tea. So I figure, why not drink a cup everyday?

Matcha Tea

Supercharged green tea?

In recent years, matcha – a form of green tea – has grown in popularity.

Matcha is a very fine high-quality powdered green tea from the Uji region of Japan. It is made from the entire leaves of tea bushes grown in the shade.

The grinding process of the whole leaves gives the tea a lot of flavor and texture and much more caffeine than a typical cup of steeped tea.

Since it is the only form of tea in which the (powdered) leaves are ingested, matcha contains even more antioxidants that regular green tea. In fact, some have suggested that one cup of matcha is the equivalent to 10 cups of regular green tea.

  1. If your cardiologist recommends avoiding coffee and caffeine be careful with the Matcha. It makes my rhythm any but normal.

    Another good choice is Rooibos tea. No caffeine and lots of antioxidants.

  2. My wife has green tea everyday but I prefer Earl Gray English tea… however I’ve noticed I have begun saying “Cheerio”, “Ta” and “Bloody” lately…

    1. LOL a good start on the use of ” proper English ” a few more cups and we can have a good chin wag about milk first or second :)

      1. I say old chap. A chin wag over a pint of bitters is just what is needed at times like this or perhaps tea and crumpets for our abstaining fellows.

  3. Japanese soul-food, bowl of rice, a little nori (dried seaweed) a small bit of salt. add hot green tea.. “ocha-zuke” in the Japanese language.

  4. Hmmm, I’ve heard of other people who drank that kind of tea having the same problem ( chuckle, snicker ).

  5. Response to k-bay: During the 2 weeks of covid in our house, we ate a lot of ocha-zuke. Essentially it is a rice porridge. We also add umeboshi (pickled plum) and rice crackers to ours when feeling under-the-weather. The only protein our bodies could tolerate at the time was chicken.

    Now that we are over covid, we are back to eating a greater variety and we do not want to see, much less eat rice or chicken for a while.

There is no demonstrated efficacy or any usable correlation between green tea consumption and cancer prevention Supporting studies published by teh NIH and others, where the data set was available, reported inconclusive findings. Some health benefits of green tea are well document and can be supported most are not. Most commentary is anecdotal. That said, I drink certain types of green tea, up to three times per day – because I freaking like the stuff.

    My rant -> repeatable data sets are the lord and master of science. Most medical researchers that I have worked with have no mastery of statistics, and used canned code to blindly perform an analysis. Most physicians, NPs, and PAs that I have worked with were not smart people. But they did have drive, determination and good memories, they were not smart people.

    FWIW, I used to work in the medical equipment industry, and have degrees in EE, CS, and math. I am not a genius, but I can smell a B.S. data set or a bogus study at 100 meters. Like my gunny used to say, “never underestimate the power of stupid people.”

    1. “repeatable data sets are the lord and master of science”… too bad those data sets are not allowed the light-of-day in mainstream ‘science’ (which is actually political science these days) regarding covid treatments that actually work. But I digress off-topic. And I will continue to drink my green tea for its well-known health benefits.
