On May 17, 2010 08:32 UTC, The Icelandic Met office earthquake map indicates that a small earthquake has occurred at the Katla location at the rim of the east caldera. In what could be an early indication of the event that is expected to occur (an eruption of Katla), a small earthquake is reported at the site. Although a single earthquake is not a precursor of an eminent eruption, it could be the first ‘sigh’ of the awakening powerful giant.
Historically, Katla has erupted after the eruption of it’s close neighbor, Eyjafjallajokull, which first erupted on April 14, 2010 and is ongoing at this moment (as of the writing of this notice). Although there is no conclusive evidence, some wonder if the magma channels beneath the two volcanoes are interconnected in some way very deep underground for one to trigger the other. A Katla eruption would likely be about ten times as powerful at the Eyjafjallajokull eruption and could cause worldwide disruption while expelling huge volumes of volcanic ash into the stratosphere which would circle the globe potentially for years, depending upon the magnitude of the eruption.
Typically before a volcanic eruption, there will be an increase (usually a significant increase) in earthquake clusters around the volcano site. This single and small earthquake simply raises an eyebrow of wonder, while we wait for the next rumble…
Katla is not erupting as of this post date (May-2010), and we are not aware of any officials having indicated that anything has changed.
Having said that, and not to be alarmist, have you started your food storage plan? Basic survival preparedness is a personal responsibility that was simply a way of life for our ancestors. Let’s not forget how.

There have been so many since, that we stopped updating this map (it would simply be a blob of earthquakes covering the region).

The Grimsvotn volcano would be rated 4 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, just under Mount St. Helens which rated a 5. IF Katla fully blew it would probably be a 6 to maybe a low 7. Krakatau was a 6 when it blew in 1883. Tambora in 1815 was a 7 and likely led to the little ice age. Volcanoes that rate 4 occur once a year, rated 5 one every 10 years, rated 6 one every 100 years, and 7 every 1000 years. The highest level on the index is 8 which would be Yellowstone or other supervolcanoes blowing. Katla is something to watch, that is for sure.

I did manage to record two earthquakes from the last burst of earthquakes. Both of them where long period earthquakes. That is magma pushing it’s way up the crust. The earthquakes happen at random time, so it is hard to know what is going on.
