What is GMO? A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.
We are growing and eating this stuff which has been altered from its natural state of being and/or engineered into a food product which cannot be found naturally in nature.
It is therefore a natural and logical question to ask oneself whether or not GMO foods have the potential to alter or affect us in any ‘unnatural’ way, given that the food itself is ‘unnatural’ and has been genetically engineered.
Companies like Monsanto Company, an agricultural biotechnology corporation and leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed and of the herbicide ‘glyphosate’, which it markets under the Roundup brand, are enormous giants with the deepest of pockets to influence change in favor of their advancement.
Apparently here in the United States nearly 75% of our food products are GE tainted (Genetically Engineered). Why aren’t Americans outraged? Until recently most Americans had no idea what GMOs were. However we’re now seeing more awareness and agitation. This has resulted in a national demand for labeling so people can reject GMOs since most Americans say that if GMOs were labeled – they would reject it.
Unfortunately the current Administration has been walking lock-step with Monsanto and has even taken some pro-GMO people from Monsanto and related organizations and put them into key positions like ‘Food Safety Czar’, USDA Secretary, USAID Director…
Many politicians are ‘under the influence’ of Monsanto and their lobbyists.
Monsanto spends billions of dollars in disinformation. In fact, Monsanto has threatened to sue any state (the most recent being the state of Vermont) if they pass legislation to require labels for genetically engineered food.
Money talks. Lobbyists have the money.
An analogy to what is going on might be something like this:
Consider Monsanto as like a pseudo drug pusher. If a company like McDonald’s put ‘crack’ in it’s burgers – hooking consumers on their food – and then sued anyone who went to Burger King for alternative food sources… people would be outraged.
Some politicians are pursuing bills to mandate GMO labeling to pass a federal law so that individual states wouldn’t be hit with lawsuits from GMO food giants like Monsanto. However the recent efforts by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was voted down in the U.S. Senate.
“If the state of Vermont wants to go forward, I don’t want to see us sued in a multimillion-dollar suit by a very powerful, wealthy corporation who says, well, you don’t have the right to do it, it is a federal prerogative,”
“So all that my legislation said is that if Vermont wants to go forward, if Connecticut wants to go forward, California wants to go forward, dozens of other states want to go forward, Monsanto and these other large corporations cannot sue them on the grounds that they don’t have the right label.”
-Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders
Preppers (and everyone else) who is planning to grow a garden should seriously consider using non-GMO non-hybrid Heirloom seeds or plants. This will provide a renewable resource because you can harvest the seeds of the mature plant and use them again next year to produce the same plant – whereas GMO seeds are a one-shot deal (and genetically modified).
