Pole Shift: North Races, South Crawls



While the speed of the earth’s magnetic north pole shift has drastically sped up lately to about 34 miles per year (55 km), let’s look at what is happening with the south magnetic pole.

Every magnetic field has two polarities, North and South for example, and one might think that whatever is happening with one pole would be happening (in the inverse?) to it’s opposite pole.

Well as it appears, the earth’s magnetic south pole is not behaving similarly to it’s opposite north pole. In fact, it’s drift, or pole shift, is actually slowing down! Presently it’s only moving 3 miles (5 km) per year, only a tenth the speed of the north!

Not only that, but it is interesting to note that both the north and south magnetic poles are favoring one side of the earth – the south pole is heavily favoring one side, and continues to move further away from true south.

The south magnetic pole is actually 1,800 miles (2,900 km) away from the earth’s true south pole! That is a substantial offset.

The north magnetic pole is fairly near true north and is ‘only’ about 360 miles (580 km) away.



When the earth is visualized with its magnetic poles more offset and favored towards one side of the planet than the other (which it has been for some time – although the south magnetic pole is moving even further to the favored side), coupled with the large variance in shift speed between the north and south, explanations may seem bizarre.

Since we know that the earth’s magnetic field is generated from the spinning liquid molten iron Outer Core (encapsulating a solid iron Inner Core), is one part of the Outer core churning differently than the other?

Could the Outer Core, or part of it, be offset somehow, causing the magnetic pole axis to pass through one side of the planet more than the other? Wouldn’t that cause the planet to wobble?

Is the iron consistency changing in one part of the Outer Core more than the other?

If the Outer Core is ‘centered’ with the rest of the earth, and the molten iron composition is considered to be relatively consistent, do these observations indicate that the magnetic axis is actually bending or warping as it passes through the planet?

These are all interesting things to think about (for some of us), and while being just a logical minded casual observer, there is no doubt that these earth changes are powerful ones – even if only occurring relative to the time frame of the planets life.

Observe the magnetic pole axis tilt, and the fairly precise indication to the part of the planet that is favored more-so by proximity to the magnetic axis.

Could crustal movements, earthquakes and volcanoes be affected differently on this side of the planet than the other? The location is certainly right on top of the pacific ring of fire, and very near the general vicinity of Indonesia (most active volcanoes in the world), and located in the part of the world that gets the majority of earthquakes. It could purely coincidental, but who’s to say…



Checked your compass lately??


The liquid part of the earth’s core is the outer core, the inner core is believed to consist of solid iron, nickel and traces of heavy elements. An assumption that many people make, is that the transition between the inner and outer core is smooth like the transition between the layers of an onion.

This is completely incorrect, the transition between these two structures is very complex, being a mixture of solid, liquid and in-between states which may be 10s or hundreds of miles thick. This, and the Coriolis effect gives rise to very complex eddy currents within the liquid outer core which in turn create a very complex magnetic field which is constantly changing.

Many texts approximate the earth’s magnetic field as a bar magnet located between the two geographic poles, but this is an over simplification with the true magnetic field being very hard to describe.

It is true that at this time the predominant field direction in the northern hemisphere is north, but the strength of this field varies significantly from location to location. If you investigate the magnetic field you will find that there are areas of north polarity (and always have been) in the southern hemisphere and likewise areas of south polarity in the northern hemisphere.

  1. Silly me but it appears that the distance moved in the last 50 year period was less then the distance moved in the first 50 year period on the map. How can you conclude it is speeding up? Yes I do see the really large movement in the 50 year period between 1910 and 1960 but that hardly can be called a trend. I honestly think that the one thing you conclude from this is that there isn’t enough information to conclude anything new.

    1. @GoneWithTheWind, more to the point, the observation and difference between North and South pole shift, is the interesting difference between the fast pace of the North versus the slow pace of the South. Apparently the earth’s magnetic field science is something not well defined or entirely understood, and a bit mysterious. I enjoy discovering and pointing out things like this, that seem a bit ‘out of the normal’. It’s up to you to decide what to make of it… take it or leave it… I’m just putting it out there-

  2. I know what happens when I spin a top. The top of the top starts to wobble more then the base. Is the earth spin slowing down also?

    1. yes actually, the earth used to spin very quickly – millions of years ago if man were here he would have experienced his days and nights consisiting of periods where the sun would rise and set several times a day. Even now the earth is gradually slowing down until we have days with the sun and moon just crawling through the sky. There are many different theories as to what will happen when eventually when it stops spinning altogether. The most published theory being likened to spring which is being wound up where when it reaches it stop point and can wind no tighter it will “spring back” and start spinning in the other direction – very quickly at first and then slowing……

  3. The opinion of the “Reader email” excerpt, professing that the earth’s core is a mixture of solids and liquids is speculation, due to lack of knowledge. The earth’s core is hollow, as are many planets. 4th Density life exists on the interior of this planet which is sustained by an hydrogen sun. Admiral Byrds exploration is a starting point of information if you are so inclined to satisfy curiosity. The earth is heating up from the inside, not the outside, as are all the planets of this solar system at this great time of Transition.

  4. The opinion of the “Readers email” is Un-scientific. Without disrespect, but what this reader is trying to tell me is ridiculous, and belongs to mainstream voodoo-pseudo-science. Our Planet is hollow, and there is no way of disproving this fact. There is no “Iron Core” – This is silly.
    “very complex eddy currents….” The only complex thing in this equation is the Readers problem with his Planet, not complying with his brainwashing.

    Interesting posts — I’ve always felt attracted to articles about the Earth’s magnetic field. Indeed my opinon about such matters has also shifted considerably over the last 50 years.

  7. I believe that we can conclude that the earth has a magnetic field. And despite our most base desires of security, the world in which we inhabit is in a constant state of flux. We are but temporary passengers living on a large Tootsie Pop, if you will. And as to any conclusions that may be concretely drawn from the above article. We know that something inhabits that space within and it is doing something. This is all that anyone can definitely speak surely of. One thing is for certain though. We know much more about the Tootsie Pop than the interior of our planet. Even if we knew, what could we do with that knowledge? That seems to be the more appropriate speculation. These observations must amount to something more. We are on a brink of a new growth in scientific discovery. I believe that there is an infinite amount of discovery left in this universe. Scientists of the 21st century are poised to take it to the next level!!! Just like the intellectuals of the 19th century gave birth to the industrial and technical evolution. Exciting!!

  8. has any one checked comet png 2000 which has not been talked about on any news but is closest to earth march 11, much closer that halleys comet. check jpl small body data base nasa. why has news not told us about it and will it upset the balance. just a thought, cheers

    1. @Anonymous, the only listed near-earth-objects on March 11 that I found are…
      (2005 EY169) 220 meter asteroid at 28 lunar distances from earth
      (2000 EB14) 140 meter asteroid at 50 lunar distances from earth
      (2010 JK1) 80 meter asteroid at 72 lunar distances from earth

  9. I think Anonymous (on February 25) was referring to 2000 PN9. It is the comet that many people are referring to as “Elenin” after the astronomer who located it. There is much talk on youtube and the web about this comet and March 15th in terms of a pole shift. I don’t know if anyone involved in the discussions have any credibility, however. It is listed on with a date of March 10.

  10. Has anyone considered that our whole solar system passing through the galactic center might be having a significant effect on our planets magnetic core?

  11. does anyone think the movement of the pole toward true north may correalate with the steady expansion of the South Atlantic magnetic anomolie? It was only discovered because of ships logs recording their passages,including magnetic variation at differing latitudes,the anomalie now extends to Brazil.

  12. Drawing a straight line from the North Magnetic Pole to the South Magnetic Pole seems the obvious thing to do, but is incorrect. The earth’s magnetism is not a simple dipole magnet. If you approximate the earth’s magnetism by a dipole, the ends are at the North and South Geomagnetic Poles. These behave more how you would expect.

  13. Pole shifts, while not *common*, do happen. Tectonic shifts will increase and other events will happen. “Fasten your seat belts, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride”.

Many thanks!, also I have a question, does anyone know what happens to an energy field if the North and South Poles are forced together? and, if this were to hypothetically happen to our planet, what the foreseeable consequences are likely to be?

    1. @karmangel, I have not found an update. It seems that data site that I used in Canada is currently down. However you could extrapolate its probable position given its current rate of movement. Your question regarding ‘forced together’… it cannot happen that way, given the physical laws of our universe – however the magnetic north and south poles can shift around and even ‘flip’, which has been proven to have happened millions of years ago.

  15. i left a comment on the north pole section of this blog.. the link to this south pole blog did not appear till after i posted it, so, i will conclude what i have to say, here. very interesting how it is favouring one side, and how far removed the south magnetic pole is, from the geographic pole, is interesting to note. the book “DNA in the Sands of Time” (by J. Justice) which i mentioned in the other comment, i forgot to mention that it says that the core spins, but is slowing down, and that it does this prior to flipping and reversing, and it reached the point of no return, a few years back, so, it will flip. this planet’s actual axis rotation will also reverse, after the geographical pole shift happens, after the magnetic pole shift occurs. This planet’s day used to be exactly 24 hours, and its yearly trip around the sun, used to be exactly 360 days. Some events long ago, had changed this. (and these are also mentioned in that book)

    1. other great books to read are by a dr. velikovsky, book 1 is earth in upheaval and book 2 is world’s in collision. i have ready both and it describes this event (which has happened in the past) in great detail.

I think magnetic polar shift doesn’t affect anything this year 2012.It will happen like any movement and it will not be dangerous…all the things said about the end of the word in 2012 are false…some organisations and people use science to scare people about the end of the word and they profit from that to make huge Money: survival ebook, foods, seminar, suvival technics,underground shelter…etc

    1. @fakeendworld2012, A magnetic pole shift is different from a true pole shift. The magnetic pole has indeed been moving (it always has), but now at a very fast rate. Regarding the rest of your statement, no doubt that there are those capitalizing on this just for the sake of making money. This site however, we anchor ourselves in more realistic probabilities while at the same time occasionally touching on the more remote risks that are out there. Being prepared in general, is a wise thing. If you think not, then that is your right, and perhaps your fate.

  17. Ever since I heard of the north pole moving, I have figured that it would one day lead to the earth flipping over and the top of the planet would be shifted to the bottom and vice versa. Now that I hear that the south pole is moving slower than the north, I am interested in knowing how close to each other would they have to be to cause this, if that is what will actually happen.

  18. Physically, there is nothing to cause the Earth’s magnetic field to sync
    up with it’s rotation. A westward slide or slip is a natural reality. It would be
    a miracle for the Earth’s magnetic field to rotate as fast as or faster than the
    Earth revolves.

  19. Most commenters here assume that these magnetic pole movements are caused by factors internal to the earth. Not so! It is common knowledge that the north magnetic pole makes a small circle every 24 hours from the attraction of our sun’s gravity, an external influence. It logically follows that the beginning of the straight line direction of the north magnetic pole since the 1970’s is also from an external gravitic influence. The “Tin Hat” crowd believe that it is “Nibiru” or planet X out there somewhere. Others believe that it is the result of our solar system moving through the galactic equator. I’ve yet to see proof of Nibiru from scientific data. The galactic equator can’t be seen because it is supposedly an intense disc-like zone of gravity extending out from a black hole at the center of the galaxy. We will know that this is the cause of the north magnetic pole’s straight-line movement when it dramatically changes direction. Chances are that the south magnetic pole will start going in a straight line then.

  20. when the poles actually shift, I have read that the earth’s wobble will cause wind speeds that will approach 600-800 mph and that sub freezing temperatures will follow. is that how you see it? and would you have an opinion on the wind speeds and expected temperatures.
