Non Lethal Force | Stun Gun

There are many hypothetical circumstances which do not rise to the level of lethal force. Rather, non lethal force. Lets talk about the stun gun.
Someone on the blog recently said, “I’m considering other less than lethal deterrent…”
Your speaking of “less than lethal” options jogged my memory. I bought my wife and daughter each a “Vipertek VTS-195 Police stun gun/flashlight” a couple of years ago. It’s rechargeable and is a decently bright light. I just moved one to the lamp table adjacent the front door.

What is a Stun Gun
A Stun Gun is an electrical self-defense device that uses high voltage to stop an attacker.
How does a Stun Gun work?
Touching a person with the prongs on the Stun Gun quickly immobilizes the attacker. However, because the amperage is very low, no serious or permanent injury is inflicted.
Stun Guns are designed to key into the nervous system. They dump their energy into the muscles at a different frequency than the pulse waves emanating from the brain.
The pulse waves coming from the brain and those from the stun gun collide at the nerve synapse’ which is a type of complex processing switch adjacent to each muscle group.
The resulting energy collision makes it difficult for an attacker to move and function. This causes disorientation and loss of balance and leaves the attacker in a passive and confused condition for several minutes.
Still, stun guns have no significant effect on the heart and other organs.
How long do the affects last?
As a general rule, a one-half second contact from a stun gun will repel and startle the attacker, giving some pain and muscle contraction.
One to two seconds will cause muscle spasms and a dazed mental state.
Over three seconds will cause loss of balance and muscle control, mental confusion and disorientation.
How to use the Stun Gun
However, don’t think about how many seconds you should hold the Stun Gun to your attacker. Think about it this way. Throw out what the books say and the online information you have read about Stun Guns.
You should hold your stun gun to the assailant until they drop and you can get away and call the police, whether that may be one second or six seconds.
Will the shock transfer to another person?
The electrical shock that emits from the stunning device will not pass from the person being stunned to the person doing the stunning. The effect is localized only in the affected area and does not pass through the body.

Taser Pulse Self-Defense Tool
The next level is something like this, a Taser. Yes it is much more expensive.
Optimized self-defense range: 15-foot Shooting distance, ideal for most defensive situations.

Useful for maintaining social distancing. :-)
Taser could work I like the last Taser Pulse Self-Defense Tool ($799 is a little stiff) that you have on display at least you have the option of a 15 ft. distance.
Less lethal is a difficult choice because if I have to pull any weapon on someone that means that I already feel that my life is in danger so it would be better to pull my ccw pistol or knife (legal in FL) Pistol works real well in stopping someone dead in their tracks from attacking you. Just drawing it from the holster stops them… I speak from personal experience.
Could use some bear spray on a marauding crowd that is on your door step… It will help clear out their disease infested lungs and sinus. Just kidding I know it is illegal… But the rules are changing everyday soooo… Get ready folks and stay safe.
Thanks Ken
I’ve put a stun gun on my list for the next bunch of stuff I plan to buy. Let’s see if we MSB’ers can do some brainstorming and come up with some more great options.
Here’s what we’ve come up with so far:
1. High decibel motion sensing alarms for disorientation.
2. Motion sensing strobe lights for disorientation.
3. High lumen flashlights & lasers for blinding.
4. Bear spray & mace for immobilization.
5. Dry chemical fire extinguisher for immobilization.
6. Stun gun for immobilization.
7. Pot of boiling soup?
8. Baseball bat, hammer (blunt weapons).
9. Axe, machete, knife (edged weapons).
Just remember, during those split SECOND moments, the police are MINUTES away. Burglars and attackers may not be alone. A knock on your front door could mean someone coming in your back door or window.
Please add to the list.
We use strobe lasers, mounted to our M4s, to make counter fire difficult, and to illuminate the target. Many times, being bathed in confusing lines of laser light is enough to evoke surrender.
Perhaps a self induced sneezing coughing fit in their face.
Grits..if you’re stuck for some home/house/apartment security (really this is very simple..sigh), collect up a whack of wire hangers. sort of inter twine the ends and hooks and lay a swathe in front of windows and doors. Make sure it is wide enough it cant easily be stepped over. Someone stepping on this is likely to make a racket, and might get tangled in.
used to know someone who did this. Cant say though, if it was ever actually tested.
Frog or flounder gig…ouch
What could happen if the person being stunned touches the person stunning? Like skin touch?
Read the last paragraph of the article ;)
The Taser is very effective. We used to use it at Walt Disney World to subdue drunks and hot heads wanting to fight us.
Everything was wonderful, and we stopped many a crazy, screaming, fellow with them…from a safe distance…Quickest Taser in Fantasyland!…until one of the Sheriff Deputies assigned to our security, let an untrained Cast Member…look as his. The Cast Member then promptly tasered HIMSELF to the ground. The Deputy was removed from the Disney Detail, and the idiot Administration decided to ban the use of tasers!
Now, people are just gang tackled, cuffed, and carried into the tunnels, as they squirm about and yell. Oh, well. All fun is fleeting.
If I am in a situation where I, or anyone in my family, is in danger. I shall not hesitate to eliminate that danger, in accordance with what I perceive it to be.
More than one bad guy? Bad guy is holding something in their hand? Bad guy keeps trying to get inside AFTER he knows you are there?
They die. No warning, no quarter.
It is better to be judged by 12, than to be carried by 6.
That’s logical. When one’s life is threatened with deadly force, well, yep – there’s gonna be a problem… I believe that most regulars here in this blog are of similar notion – and well prepared to deal with that instance.
The article though was written simply to message that there are other hypothetical situations where non deadly force may be an appropriate equal and opposite defense.
Ision, very well said!
Ision,
Under normal circumstances I agree with you and I’m well prepared for that when I only have myself to worry about. Right now I’m taking care of my mom and I can’t do that from a jail cell. Cities are weird, even in self defense you’re going to at least spend the night in jail depending on the circumstances. Then a long drawn out process of trying to get your firearm back. Just looking for alternatives here, subdue said scumbag, have the police pick them up, close the door and go make dinner for mom.
Chased a poacher off last fall with a high lumen flashlight that had a green laser dot option. When that dot hit him he took off like a shot.
Anony Mee — did not know there was a flashlight with this option?
what brand is it ? Maybe an amazon link?
Jane Foxe
Farm helper borrowed it. Will get it back and let you know. Found it at feed store. Not inexpensive.

Illegal to possess in our state. Treated as felony possession.
Democrats dont like anyone being able to defend themselves.
Hi Ken
Tasers and stun guns have there place in self defense, I preferer pepper spray witch I’ve used meny times. Pepper spray keeps you at a safe distance 5 to 15 feet from your attacker, you can deal with mutable attackers at one time, and the effects last about 30 minutes. The down side to pepper spray is over spray witch happens in a confined space, this is usually manageable.
OK, got it. Looks like they travel only from one probe to another.
Live in NY and most everything is illegal. Keep a few cans of wasp spray near doors stuff shoots 15 feet Figure it’s better than nothing!
